About Us
The Netherlands War Graves Foundation (Oorlogsgravenstichting in Dutch) in Indonesia is a unique organisation* with around 120 employees, operating under the Netherlands War Graves Foundation in the Netherlands. We’re tasked with the maintenance of 7 war cemeteries across Java, holding the remains of over 25,000 war victims, mostly civilian (over 75%) and mostly from the WWII era.
For most of their existence, the war cemeteries have been closed to the public, as our main mission was to ensure that war victims were buried with dignity and their loved ones could visit them to commemorate. Access was largely restricted to family and friends of the victims.
Now that less and less people remain who experienced the war themselves, the war cemeteries have opened to the public to ensure that the stories can be kept alive and lessons can be drawn for the future.
This means that we not only focus on maintaining the war cemeteries and informing & hosting relatives and descendants of the war victims, but also on telling the stories of the war cemeteries to other audiences, most notably Indonesian and foreign visitors.
