Netherlands War Graves Foundation (OGS) Indonesia

About Us

OGS Indonesia is a unique organisation* with around 120 employees, operating under the Netherlands War Graves Foundation (OGS) in the Netherlands. We’re tasked with the maintenance of 7 war cemeteries across Java, holding the remains of over 25,000 war victims.

The 7 war cemeteries are the following, with the central office based in Jakarta:

  • Ereveld Menteng Pulo (South Jakarta)
  • Ereveld Ancol (North Jakarta)
  • Ereveld Leuwigajah (Cimahi)
  • Ereveld Pandu (Bandung)
  • Ereveld Kalibanteng (Semarang)
  • Ereveld Candi (Semarang)
  • Ereveld Kembang Kuning (Surabaya)

For most of their existence, these war cemeteries have been closed to the public, as our main mission was to ensure that war victims were buried with dignity and their loved ones could visit them to commemorate. Access was largely restricted to family and friends of the victims.

Now that less and less people remain who can tell the stories from their own experience, the war cemeteries have opened to the public to ensure that the stories can remain to be told and lessons can be drawn for the future.

This also means that – for the first time in our existence – we not only focus on relatives and descendants of the war victims, but also on other groups, most notably Indonesian and foreign visitors and other stakeholders, such as local government.
