Koalisi Rakyat untuk Keadilan Perikanan (KIARA)

KIARA or the People’s Coalition for Fisheries Justice is a non-governmental organization established in Yogyakarta on October 2, 2002. This non-profit organization was initiated by 9 institutions or civil society organizations that have a focus and concern on marine and fisheries issues.

Since its inception, KIARA has been committed to fighting for and strengthening the management of coastal and marine resources as a form of sovereignty for communities who have lived for generations in coastal areas and small islands in order to obtain recognition, protection and a decent standard of living from the Government of the Republic of Indonesia. 

As an institution and network of civil society organizations and coastal communities, KIARA is present as a movement that fights for and upholds the values ​​of taking sides in the living space of coastal communities (fishermen, fisherwomen, fish farmers, salt farmers and coastal ecosystem conservationists) in a fair and sustainable manner through efforts in the form of education and training, conducting studies and research, disseminating information, campaigns and policy advocacy, and developing resource management models with a community – based approach
