Organisational Background

Alam Sehat Lestari (ASRI) is an innovative planetary health non-profit located in West Kalimantan, Indonesia. It works to conserve the biodiversity of tropical rainforests by meeting the surrounding communities’ health and economic needs.  Since 2007, ASRI has worked around Gunung Palung National Park (GPNP), a 108,000-hectare rain forest in West Kalimantan that is home to 5-10% of the world’s remaining orangutans and a watershed for 60,000 people. ASRI Clinic provides high-quality, discounted health care to local communities in exchange for commitments to forest conservation. ASRI is a world-renowned organization that has been recognized with multiple awards globally and within Indonesia including the Whitley Award and Kalpataru Award. Our integrated work with human health and conservation has brought about a dramatic decline in logging. In 2018, ASRI expanded to villages near Bukit Baka Bukit Raya National Park (BBBRNP) in Melawi Regency, West Kalimantan, a 181,090-hectare rainforest in central Borneo, critical for orangutan reintroduction.

Position Purpose

To provide entry-level technical support for day-to-day research functions and services in support of the Field Research Coordinator and Research Manager.

Main Responsibilities

  1. Assist the Field Research Coordinator in planning research activities within the organization’s work areas
  2. Implementing and documenting research activities within the organization’s work areas
  3. Conducting wildlife monitoring using camera traps and other methods
  4. Involved in ecological research, such as on survival rates for reforestation efforts
  5. Work closely with the research team to collect, analyze, and interpret research data accurately
  6. Assist the Field Research Coordinator with records and contribute to the preparation of comprehensive research reports
  7. Contribute to other related research topics that may arise, demonstrating flexibility and adaptability
  8. Ensure strict adherence to ethical standards and research protocols
  9. Working closely with the Field Research Coordinator

Essential Requirement

  1. Non-Smoker
  2. Minimum of a bachelor’s degree in Biology, Forestry, or another relevant field
  3. Fresh graduates are encouraged to apply by demonstrating a strong interest in ecological research, especially botany and plant ecology
  4. Research experience in botany or plant ecology is preferred
  5. Willing to conduct field visits across all working areas, requiring physical fitness and an ability to work in various environmental conditions
  6. Ability to work independently and collaboratively within ASRI organization.
  7. Excellent organizational and communication skills
  8. Proficient in data collection and analysis techniques
  9. Proficiency in Microsoft Office
  10. Proficiency in English (written or oral) is preferred
  11. Willingness to undertake extensive field visits across all working areas
