The position would start as soon as possible (ideally in October 2022) and will be based in Sidikalang, Sumatera Utara, with very frequent visits to farmers. The project provides technical assistance to improve the resilience of farming families for 3,000 coffee farmers in the Sidikalang Area.
Main Duties and Responsibilities:
  1. Identify the existing situation of farming families in the project area to see the gap and foresee solutions by the project document.
  2. Working together with the Senior Agronomist to identify target farmers (groups) and the proper approach for the GAP training.
  1. Working together with farmers in identifying and developing an integrated and resilient farming system that contributes to the improved livelihood of the farmers’ families.
  2. Provide relevant assistance to better practice of farmers in managing their farm as a family business; from coffee and other crops. This will include the facilitation of better and extended markets.
  3. Provide feedback and inputs to the Senior Agronomist and Project Coordinator in the development of a training program for coffee farmers. This will include but is not limited to developing the proper approach as well as the schedule for training on GAP for 3,000 coffee farmers.
  1. Provide technical assistance after training to the farmers. This will be conducted in form of farm visits and consultations with farmers. Specific efforts in raising awareness of farmers in reducing chemical use will be the main topic delivered during the farm visits.
  2. Work closely with the Senior Agronomist and M&E officer in developing a baseline for the project to measure the progress as per KPI.
  3. Draft monthly and annual plans, and liaise closely with the Senior Agronomist, M&E Officer, consultants, and the Project Coordinator to ensure the alignment of activities.
  4. Prepare bi-weekly and monthly reports for activities (what have done, status up to date, and what to do).
  5. Maintain associated databases and records, and report regularly to the team and HRNS Indonesia management.
  1. Maintaining good communication with the government and other stakeholders in the area.
Required profile:
a. University degree or equivalent (in Agriculture, Social economics, Sociology) and several years’ experience related to coffee and other crops such as vegetables/fruits and integrated tropical smallholder farming systems.
b. Experience in training farmers and applying agricultural extension approaches.
c. Good knowledge of rural development issues, the Indonesian coffee sector, and climate change issues faced by the sector.
d. Willing and able to spend up to 80% of the time in the field under basic conditions.
e. Computer literate in word processing, spreadsheet, and presentation software.
f. Ability to drive a heavy motorbike and manual-transmission car.
g. A flexible team player who can also assume responsibility and act independently, who is reliable, diligent, well-organized, and focused on achieving tangible results.
Further desirable
  1. Ability to communicate in Bahasa & English required, and local languages is an asset.
  2. Expertise or experience with ArcGIS or other mapping tools is an asset.
