Photovoices International (PVI) is an Indonesian non-profit organization that supports underrepresented communities, especially women and youth, to take action to improve their lives through a facilitated learning process using photography to tell their stories and advocate for their cause. Our work is based on the principles of social justice including equity, access, inclusion, diversity, participation and rights. The program implements participatory methodologies, including photography, to document social and environmental concerns, local histories, personal experiences, and cultural perspectives, all of which are critical to understanding and addressing gender, natural resource management, community development and empowerment issues within unique settings.
Position Title: Field Program Coordinator
Purpose of the Position: The Field Program Coordinator is responsible for coordinating and facilitating the implementation of Photovoices programs at the village and regional levels. The goal of Photovoices programs is to bring community voices, especially those of women and youth, into decision-making. Issues focused on during Photovoices programs often include access to clean water, health, education, gender, youth, community development and natural resource management. The program results in meaningful articulation of community perspectives backed-up by powerful visual images and readies participants to provide vital local context to and actively participate in decisions that impact their lives.
Responsibilities:
- Leads volunteer community participants in a facilitated learning process that includes training on photography, communication and participatory research.
- Guides the process of critical thinking and conversations about core issues, concerns and aspirations at regular meetings.
- Supports participants as they research and document issues of concern.
- Facilitates opportunities for participants to increase knowledge, skills, confidence and sense of agency.
- Develops working relationships with partners and decision-makers including local and regional government officials, NGOs, business and community leaders with the purposes of bridging a connection, keeping them informed on the program’s progress and preparing them to receive community input and act on issues brought forward by program participants.
- Organizes the final Exhibition and Workshop where participants present their findings, photos and stories to advocate for positive change.
- Coordinates program monitoring, evaluations and learning as well as follow-up plans.
Knowledge & Skills:
- Excellent communication and relationship-building skills.
- Strong facilitation and community organizing skills and experience in participatory methodologies.
- Strong knowledge of gender, human rights, natural resource management, and community development issues.
- Ability and willingness to live and work in a village settings for 6-8 months, to travel, work flexible hours, including weekends, holidays and evenings, and to work under stress during peak workload periods.
- Cross-cultural sensitivity, flexible world view, emotional maturity and physical stamina.
- Thorough knowledge of MS office.
- Passion for photography is a plus.
- Fluency in English is preferable.
