Job Description
The overall objective of this assignment is to produce actionable market intelligence on the tomato value chain that enables Agriterra and its partner cooperatives to make informed decisions on variety selection, market positioning, processing opportunity, business planning to generate evidence-based insights and develop a market ‘donut’ that visualizes market structure, key segments, and opportunity spaces within the tomato value chain. This overall objective is to support KPI of De Eik I Indonesia, particularly:
- B.3.1 Advisory on business development by CAs.
- B.4.1 Advice on the market linkage by CA.
- C.2.1 Advisory on value chain support linkage.
- C.3.1 Advisory on sustainable service & service plan development.
Specifically, the study aims to:
- Identify and classify tomato cherry, tomato beef, common (vegetables), and other high demand tomato varieties available in the Indonesian market (represented by Jakarta, Bogor, Tangerang, Bekasi, and Bandung) including their respective demand, average price, characteristics, and uses across market segments, both fresh (raw) and processed (downstream) products.
- Identify and profile key market actors (buyers, traders, processors), including their purchasing volumes, average price, frequency of demand, quality standards, and supply requirements, payment method.
- Assess how big the opportunity is, and how much of it can our cooperatives realistically go after. Estimate the market size and opportunity by assessing the Total Addressable Market (TAM), Serviceable Available Market (SAM), and Serviceable Obtainable Market (SOM) for selected tomato segments.
- Assess the feasibility and potential of direct trade models between farmer organizations/cooperatives and market actors, including the applicability of contract farming arrangements, key requirements, risks, and enabling conditions.
Expected Results
- Agriterra possesses a strong understanding of various tomato variety market and value chain dynamics in the Indonesian market (represented by Jakarta, Bogor, Tangerang, Bekasi, and Bandung) providing a solid basis for guiding All four cooperative’s business development.
- The assessment results serve as a foundation for Agriterra to advise all cooperatives staff in building concrete linkages and maintaining ongoing engagement with key support actors.
- These findings also give cooperatives a clear, evidence-based understanding of the tomato market and value chain.
- Based on this insight, cooperatives are able to develop a practical and strategic market-access plan.
Job Requirements
The assignment requires a consultant or consulting team with:
- Demonstrated experience in agribusiness or horticulture market research in Indonesia
- Strong understanding of agricultural value chains, preferably in the horticultural sector
- Ability to conduct fieldwork in Jabodetabek and Bandung area
- Capacity to produce high-quality, practical analytical reports in English
- Experience in buyer and stakeholder mapping, including direct outreach for contact verification
