1. Project Context

Project Manager will become a caretaker of each 5 pathway departments, work alongside under direct supervision of Communication Director and President Director, the Project Officer will provide oversight on the assigned project location(s) and is primarily responsible for the coordination of project-related activities. S/He will be responsible for coordinating the overall projects planning, implementation, monitoring of progress, facilitation of requirements to secure project progress, synergies activities across the relevant staff and experts within the project, coordination and relationship building with key stakeholders, including relevant national and local governments, within the specifically assigned project location(s) to her/him.

Brief information about the 1000 Bamboo Villages, currently the world emits up to 40 Billion tons of Carbon Dioxide into the atmosphere every year. Our vision is to take 1000 Bamboo Villages here in Indonesia and expand that to 9 other countries that collectively with absorb and remove out of the atmosphere 1 Billion tons of Carbon Dioxide every single year. Tropical Rainforests are important to us as humans because they are the foundation to Earths life support systems and in those life support systems you have more than half of the plants and animals on the planet and we need to understand that without these healthy soils without these healthy water systems without the healthy air we cannot survive and thrive on this planet.

The Environmental Bamboo foundation is not only trying to stop these forests disappearing but we are trying to restore the degraded lands that were the forests of the past. With the 1000 bamboo villages, we aiming to want to create what we call a Restoration Economy where people, especially rural farming communities can actively restore these degraded lands around the world and make a very good economy for themselves their families and their communities in the process

The 1000 Bamboo Villages allows farmer cooperatives to produce value-added bamboo products, at the village level, by creating an integrated forest to the factory production system.
Our 1000 Bamboo program is a holistic system where we take degraded land reintroduce native species and set aside areas for food crops and cash crops within this larger agroforestry reality.

One of the key benefits of our agroforestry system is that we create knitted hydrology of short medium and deep roots. To create a sponge that holds water in the soil and helps these forestry systems to thrive. The global Bamboo market is currently projected to reach 93 Billion US dollars by 2025. We aim to restore 2 million hectares of degraded land.  Generate an industry revenue of 6-9 Billion US dollars per annum and create more than 1 million jobs in the process. The Bamboo Village program allows farmers to produce two main bamboo products. Bamboo strips and Bamboo pallets, strips are the raw material for Bamboo planks that can supply woodworking industries of the world. Bamboo pallets are a Byproduct of the strip production and are an excellent source of Carbon neutral Bioenergy that can generate electricity and provide a safe fuel for cooking

Globally the main Bamboo markets are for the food industry, for the construction industry, for the textile industry and most interestingly are to take the wastes from a lot of these industries and press it into a little pellet that can become renewable energy of the future

We believe that to successfully execute the 1000 Bamboo Village vision, we have 5 key pathways that we have to activate such as, Strengthening Investment drivers for Bamboo, Creating the Bamboo Villa APP, Sustainable Bamboo Certification, Activating Markets and The National Strategy

The first pathway is what we call strengthening Investment Drivers for Bamboo and that means to convince farmers and businesses and bankers that Bamboo is a very good investment. The second pathway is to create the Bamboo Village App. This means that we want to bring farmers and markets together on one online platform providing a gateway for all transactions to take place. While rating the performance and quality of each of these farmer cooperative suppliers.

The Third pathway is to create a certification system that ensures that the supply chain and value chain for Bamboo are sustainable and we are working with the Forestry Stewardship Council to make sure that that is true. Hence Buyers can follow the entire chain custody and know that the Bamboo they buy is both sustainable and supportive of local communities. The Fourth pathway is to activate markets for Bamboo and what that means is work with different international and domestic partners to make sure that all the Bamboo gets bought.

The Fifth pathway is to take the first, second, third and fourth pathway bring it together and create a National and International strategy for the community-based bamboo-based industry. that empowers the support and resources needed to make a community-based Bamboo industry successful not only in Indonesia but around the world. This national strategy is supporting farmers to grow bamboo on these degraded lands, manage these forestry management systems, build a village-based factory and sell these pallets and strips at a fair price that allows them to understand how much money they are making at the end of the month at the end of the year and into the future.

 

2.  Functions / Key Results Expected

Summary Key function and results Expected:

S/he will serve as a leader and coordinator of the project team with the following responsibilities:

  • Coordination of Project-related activities:

The Project Manager (PM) is responsible for the quality implementation of the project and for leading and supervising the project activities carried out and being implemented at the specific assigned location(s) to her/him. The PM also supervises timely submission of all requested project outputs, consolidates, and analyses monitoring and evaluation results.

  • Implementation of projects include:

o  Leads project implementation, and supervises the quality of the project´s activities and outputs carried out and being implemented at the specific assigned location(s) (in close cooperation with Government Officials, Monitoring, Evaluation, and Learning unit, Admin & Procurement Officer, Finance & Grant Officers, Project, Finance and Admin Assistants, and Component Leaders).

o  Prepares all the project related reports.

o  Prepares and implements the work plan together with the team.

o  Coordinates and carries out project-related activities.

o  Ensures that all administrative, procurement and financial tasks are done in time (together with Admin & Procurement Officer, Finance & Grant Officers, Project, Finance and Admin Assistants)

o  Develop and maintain project records such as databases, reports, and records of decisions.

o  Ensures that project-related documents are archived following the project’s requirements.

  • Monitoring and evaluation:

o  In collaboration with the Monitoring, Evaluation, and Learning unit, elaborates and assures that monitoring is conducted according to the framework.

o  Assures that the indicators and obligations towards the donors related to the projects are fulfilled.

o  Assures that direct project costs are being spent following the budget.

o  Develop and deliver semester reports for Project and Financial management.

  • External relations:

o  Develop and maintain proactive, positive and professional relationships with key government officials at the national and local level, partner organizations, CSOs, Donor, and national & international media;

o  Maintain responsible media coverage of program events in coordination with The Communication Director and Communication & Stakeholders Relation Expert.

  • Administration:

o  Ensures that all projects related administrative tasks are fulfilled (data record, correspondents, support in any events, etc.)

o  Provides necessary capacity building in administrative and procedural requirements.

o  Ensure project compliance with YBL’s policies and procedures.

o  Prepares and supervises contractual matters related to the project (in cooperation with Project, Finance and Admin Assistants, HR and Operational unit in YBL).

  • Impact of Results

The key results of the assignment will give positive impacts for strategic program implementation, including:

o        Successful and more substantively accountable program implementation.

o        Good communication and facilitation to key stakeholders that led to YBL perceived as a trusted working partner.

o        Opportunities for developing and implementing a longer-term governance program under the cooperation between YBL, related government institutions, and donors.

4. Recruitment Qualifications

  • Education:

o       Minimum a Bachelor’s degree in any related field to Communication, forestry, agricultural, social sciences or related educational area with good knowledge on forestry and environment, peatland; having a good knowledge regarding forest and peatland management, climate change and development issues in general; clear commitment to the governance reform.

  • Experience:

o       Min 5 years experiences in program management, facilitation, and participatory research;  2-3 years of specialized experience working with civil society organizations and/or advocacy efforts; Wide network in climate change and forestry policy environment at the regions and national level; understanding the political environment related to climate change and forestry sector; Experience in working with international institutions is a plus.
