About Us
The Global Subsidies Initiative (GSI) was established in 2005 to analyze subsidies – transfers of public money to private interests – and how they support or undermine efforts to achieve sustainable development. The GSI works primarily on energy subsidies. Its workstreams include international projects, focused on international fora and negotiations such as the UNFCCC, G-20 and SDGs, and national projects, focused on conducting discrete research and outreach in individual countries. The GSI is a program of the International Institute for Sustainable Development (IISD), one of the world’s leading centres of policy research and innovation. The Institute provides practical solutions to the growing challenges and opportunities of integrating environmental and social priorities with economic development. It also reports on international negotiations and shares knowledge gained through collaborative projects, resulting in more rigorous research, stronger global networks, and better engagement among researchers, citizens, businesses and policy-makers.
